Looking after your fire door

A fire door only protects you if it is kept as it was certified. This guide says what to check and what to leave alone.

  • Keep it shut when not in use and never wedge it open unless it has an alarm-linked hold-open
  • Do not paint over the intumescent or smoke seals
  • Do not fit, remove or replace ironmongery, viewers, letter plates or glass without checking the certification
  • Check it closes into the latch on its own from a few degrees open
  • Report damage, missing seals or a closer that does not close the door

The five-step fire door check takes two minutes.
